Connect OpenClaw to WhatsApp (and Fix the Disconnect Problem)

WhatsApp is the channel most people actually want their agent on — it's where their real conversations happen. It's also OpenClaw's most fragile channel, because it doesn't use an official bot API the way Telegram does. Understanding how it works explains both the setup and the famous disconnect problem.

How OpenClaw connects to WhatsApp

OpenClaw joins WhatsApp as a linked device on your account — the same mechanism as WhatsApp Web. You scan a QR code from your phone, and the agent gets a session that lets it send and receive messages as a companion device. That means:

• No Meta business API, no approval process, no per-message fees
• Your agent talks from your own number (or a second number if you prefer separation)
• The session behaves — and expires — like a WhatsApp Web login

Setting it up

1. Enable the WhatsApp channel in OpenClaw (on ClawHost this is a toggle in the dashboard; self-hosted it's a config change plus gateway restart).
2. OpenClaw generates a pairing QR code.
3. On your phone: WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device, and scan the code.
4. Send your agent a message. First-message latency of a few seconds is normal while the session warms up.

A practical tip: consider a dedicated number (an eSIM or spare SIM) for the agent. It keeps agent chatter out of your personal account and makes it safe to share the agent with family or a team.

The disconnect problem

Linked-device sessions are not permanent. In practice, OpenClaw WhatsApp sessions drop and need re-pairing roughly every two weeks — sometimes sooner if the gateway restarts unexpectedly or WhatsApp rotates session keys. Self-hosted, that means noticing the agent went quiet (often a day later), SSHing in, regenerating the QR, and re-scanning.

You can't eliminate re-pairing — it's a property of how WhatsApp treats companion devices — but you can make it a 30-second non-event:

• Monitor the session, so you know the moment it drops rather than when you notice the silence.
• Keep the gateway stable. Crash-looping gateways burn sessions faster; run OpenClaw under a supervisor with clean restarts.
