Choosing the Right AI Model for Your OpenClaw Agent

Claude, GPT, Gemini, Groq or Mistral? How each model family behaves in agent work, what they cost, and a practical way to decide β€” with the freedom to switch anytime.

Updated July 2026 Β· By the ClawHost team

OpenClaw is model-agnostic: the agent is the body, and the model you connect is the brain. That choice shapes everything β€” how smart your agent feels, how fast it responds, and what your monthly bill looks like. The good news: with a BYOK setup you can switch brains in minutes, so no decision is final.

The realistic contenders

Claude (Anthropic)

The community default for serious agent work, and for a reason: strong reasoning, reliable tool use, and good judgment on multi-step tasks. Since the April 2026 subscription cutoff it's API-key-only for OpenClaw, which means metered billing β€” excellent quality, but read our cost guide before connecting a key without limits.

ChatGPT / GPT (OpenAI)

Comparable frontier quality, with one unique advantage: OpenAI still allows subscription sign-in, so a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription can power your agent at a flat rate. For heavy daily use that's often the best value in the entire ecosystem β€” details in our ChatGPT guide.

Gemini (Google)

Gemini Flash is the budget workhorse: very cheap, very fast, and more than capable for routine chat, summaries and reminders. Frontier Gemini models are competitive for complex work too. A common pattern is Flash as the daily default.

Groq-hosted open models

Groq serves open models (Llama family and friends) at extremely high speed and low cost. Great for latency-sensitive uses and high-volume automation; less consistent than frontier models on long multi-step reasoning.

Mistral

Strong European option with competitive pricing and good instruction-following β€” worth a look if EU data residency matters to you.

You don't have to marry one

The strongest setups treat models as interchangeable: a cheap fast default for everyday chat, switching up to a frontier model when the task is hard. On ClawHost you configure your provider from the dashboard and can change it whenever β€” your agent's memory, channels and skills stay put while the brain swaps out.

Skip the Server Admin Entirely

ClawHost runs OpenClaw on a dedicated server for you β€” live in about 60 seconds, from $12/month. Bring your own API key or sign in with ChatGPT.
