The realistic contenders

Claude (Anthropic)

The community default for serious agent work, and for a reason: strong reasoning, reliable tool use, and good judgment on multi-step tasks. Since the April 2026 subscription cutoff it's API-key-only for OpenClaw, which means metered billing — excellent quality, but read our cost guide before connecting a key without limits.

ChatGPT / GPT (OpenAI)

Gemini (Google)

Gemini Flash is the budget workhorse: very cheap, very fast, and more than capable for routine chat, summaries and reminders. Frontier Gemini models are competitive for complex work too. A common pattern is Flash as the daily default.

Groq-hosted open models

Groq serves open models (Llama family and friends) at extremely high speed and low cost. Great for latency-sensitive uses and high-volume automation; less consistent than frontier models on long multi-step reasoning.

Mistral

Strong European option with competitive pricing and good instruction-following — worth a look if EU data residency matters to you.
