OpenClaw + Discord: Give Your Server a Resident AI Agent

Discord is the community channel: where Telegram gives you a private line to your agent and WhatsApp puts it in your pocket, Discord puts it in front of your whole server. Members ask it questions, it digests busy channels, and it's on duty around the clock. Setup takes about ten minutes.

Step 1: Create the bot application

1. Go to the Discord Developer Portal and click New Application. Name it what your members will see.
2. In the left menu, open Bot. Discord creates the bot user automatically with the application.
3. Click Reset Token and copy the token shown — this is the credential OpenClaw needs. Treat it like a password; it's shown once.

Step 2: Enable the intents OpenClaw needs

Still on the Bot page, enable Message Content Intent (and Server Members Intent if you want member-aware features). Without message content access, your bot can be mentioned but can't read what anyone says.

Step 3: Invite the bot to your server

1. Open OAuth2 → URL Generator.
2. Tick the bot scope, then the permissions it needs: View Channels, Send Messages, Read Message History, Embed Links, Attach Files.
3. Open the generated URL, pick your server, authorize. The bot appears in your member list — offline until the next step.

Step 4: Connect the token to OpenClaw

On ClawHost: dashboard → Channels → Discord, paste the token, save — the bot comes online in seconds. Mention it in a channel or DM it, and you're talking to your agent.

Settings worth thinking about

• Where it listens. A bot that answers every message in every channel is noise (and token spend — see costs). Most servers scope the agent to a dedicated #ask-the-agent channel or mention-only.
• Who can use it. Public server? Remember every member message the agent answers runs on your model account. Role-restricting access keeps the bill yours to control.
• Give it a job. The best community agents have a defined role — support FAQ, daily channel digest, onboarding helper — rather than "general chatbot." Pair with a couple of skills that match the job.
